Tonight, Maggie Has Avenged Hundreds Of Sick And Bitter Children, In Only One Squirt

Tonight I gave myself a dose of “Little Colds decongestant plus cough” right in the eye. I didn’t do it on purpose, and yes, it stings. Maggie has come down with the nasty cough/flu combo that is going around right now. I was trying to get her ready for bed, and dose her up for the night so she sleeps alright. Of course, being almost two, and having embraced that two-ness with all the fervor of a newly converted religious fanatic, she had to fight me on the issue. While Little Cold’s is pretty effective, it doesn’t taste great. I had the dropper loaded in one hand, and I was trying to finagle her into my other arm, and hold her still enough to get it in her mouth when right as I was about to dispense the medication, she slapped my hand and wrenched herself halfway out of my grip. This made my trigger hand fly back, and the medicine squirted me right across both eyes.

It did burn quite a bit, so I left the living room cursing and washed my eyes out in the bathroom sink. The water in my bathroom takes a while to warm up, and I’ve just got to say that rinsing burning cold medicine out your eyes with frigid water actually makes them hurt more. Once the water warmed up a bit I was able to do a better job of it, and the stinging has passed into a weird sensation that I can’t really describe. Just in case this weirdness was the way an eye feels when it’s working on going blind and needs medical attention, I called poison control, where I got to talk to a very nice man, who although he could probably hear me blushing over the phone trying to explain exactly what happened, chose not to mock me to my face, and is, I’m sure laughing to his poison control comrades about the crazy twenty-five year old mother who squirted herself in the eye with baby cold meds.

Not everyone might realize that you can get cloth diapers right on the web and compare prices on diapers right from the comfort of home. Even if you aren’t shopping for cloth diapers you can easily find lots of baby bottles to choose from, or maybe buy one of the many baby bibs you can find online for an upcoming baby shower.

  1. OUCH! Sometimes dosing sick 2 yr olds is a two parent job. Why didn’t they issue us mom’s additional arms??? Lord knows we need them! Hang in there….it just has to get better!

  4. You seriously need to run and get a supply of those WONDERFUL new kinds of medicine for kids! Jump in the car now and GO! They are the kind that dissolve in their mouths in seconds and are loaded full of sugar so they actually like them.

I have a 4.5 year old and a 20 month old that absolutely DETEST the dreaded squirter full of medicine, but they’re absolutely willing to take these meds. (Again, probably the sugar content helps!)

I like the Tylenol tablets and the cold strips (can’t remember what brand). My DS says that the berry cold strips are gross, but the other ones are better.

Oh, and next time wear safety goggles! :)

  5. I’ve done this with dishwasher detergent! Going way too fast and some of the granules jumped up into my eye. Called poison controll & had to rinse my eye in the shower for 20 minutes. Then, they called back and told me to go to Urgent Care where I got 500 cc of COLD saline solution in my eye. And yes, they did laugh at me and I laughed at myself.
