I’m In The Market For A Pre-Dinged Table

Table: Good For Sleeping On

Yesterday, in a fit of sugar and exhaustion Maggie laid down on the kitchen table and fell asleep. This is what Halloween does to people.

But this post isn’t about the passed out preschooler. It’s about the table.

You may notice that we have an exceptionally small table. It is a two seater, with two chairs that match and two blue folding chairs that get pulled out for family meals. If we have company we either pull the plastic kiddie picnic table inside and have the kids sit down there or we pull out the card table and shove them together.

There are three reasons why we don’t have a normal sized table. First off, Chris and I have never found a table that we have both totally loved, and we try very hard to choose furniture that we are both happy about. Secondly, tables are awfully expensive! Thirdly, there is a little nagging voice in the back of my head warning me that the minute I go out and buy a beautiful, dark wood table with six or eight chairs that I love and adore, SOMEBODY is going to stab it with a fork. And then SOMEBODY else will color one of the legs with a Sharpie. And then this somebody (me) will have to cry because those darn somebodies nicked my little, tiny piece of perfection, and I will be overcome with a hollow, saddened, why-can’t-we-have-nice-things feeling, and it just won’t be pretty.

So I have decided that i am in the market for an inexpensive, pre-dinged table that hopefully seats six people, or even four with a leaf and I can still pull out the blue folding chairs when I need to. Anyone know the store that sells those? Neither do I, but I plan to find out.

  4. Go to http://www.freecycle.org/
People list stuff that they want to give away for free. I got my beautiful mahogany dining room table and 6 chairs for FREE! You just look up the group that is operating in your local area, join the group and see what you can get for free or give away to other people!

  6. Hey,

Since you live on base, why not check out the base newspaper to see if anyone is PCSing and is selling their tables for a good price. Also, Ikea is a great place for inexpensive stuff that are pretty sturdy. I haven’t checked if they have any nice looking tables though.
    Good luck with your search!

  7. Hey Leah. There is a used furniture (consignment) store here in Vacaville. It is by the DMV & Pearsons. I don’t know there prices though. We bought a leather sofa that way when we lived in Pleasanton. Give it a try.

  8. We have great Salvation Army stores in my area of Michigan. Goodwill is also a good place to check. Usually the stores located in upscale areas have really good stuff. The store I usually shop at has half off furniture specials. I bought my first drop leaf oak round kitchen table and two chairs from an ad I found in a newspaper. I still own that table 20 yrs later - it’s now in the basement. Try church rummage sales and garage sales and post your needs in your church newsletter. You’ll find what you need soon and it will make your day.

  10. This photo is just yummy. Adorable. My mother took a photo of my sister at about that age, who had fallen asleep with her head on the table and her hand in the Alphabet Soup.

  11. I love asleep kid pictures. I hear you about kids and nice things. Can’t say I’ve had a lot of nice new. Good luck finding what you’re looking for. Second hand things are out there. Maybe put an ad in a paper.
