Dirty Little Secret

fabric

Do you remember that clean, well organized scrapbook room of mine? On the surface it looks pretty good, but underneath the scrappy exterior lies a wealth of sewing supplies, all unorganized and almost unused. There are about six half finished projects, including an entire denim quilt top, a wall hanging, quilt pieces, and yards of fabric purchased with big plans that I never got around to.

I dumped it all out the other night and went through it. I haven’t thrown out a pair of jeans in twenty years. I have moved a shower curtain to three different states because I look at it and I don’t see a shower curtain, I see a fairy costume. I have two yards of day-glo pink vinyl and I don’t know why. I have extremely limited sewing skills. I’ve made a few quilts and a few dresses (with supervision). I have mad seam ripping skills from years of practice. I do not think in such a way that allows me to turn things inside out and form seams; I cannot visualize it at all. I have amazing creative visions and no way to carry them out. It is infuriating. I shouldn’t be let inside of a fabric store and yet I keep going back. Like today when I went and bought more felt that I may or may not actually use. It is an illness.

If you want to know more about the mess, I strongly suggest that you click on the photo and read my notes. Confession: it’s good for the soul.

  3. I do this all the time! I have a huge room full of fabric and have yet to do anything with it. If only I did not come from a family of women who can look at a picture and whip out something way better, no matter how complicated it is! Seam rippers are heaven sent!

  5. Ok, you are so brave to post a photo of your room in this way. This is what my whole attic looks like. It’s like a graveyard for past hobbies that I totally threw myself into only to discover another, more appealing one. My hubby is desperately hoping that scrapbooking, stamping, and paperarts NEVER go out for me. He commented this evening that he thinks we have the equivalent of a Lexus parked in my studio. I too need to practice following through on the initial enthusiasm for projects. It’s a tough burden to bear having all this creative desire inside you, isn’t it?! I guess someone must shoulder it though.
PS - Have to share a funny with you. I’ve had you on my favorites list since “A Visit” but it hasn’t automatically updated past that entry. I was concerned that you hadn’t been blogging since then and that something might be wrong. I feel really stupid (not to mention like a total electronic idiot) but the good part is that you were thought of and you were missed. I don’t even know you and was concerned about your (so I mistook) absence. Thanks for your thoughtful and thought-provoking posts. Plus, your kids are REALLY cute!
